My pond is about 1 1/2 acres in size in Northeast Nebraska. Spring and rain runoff fed. Estimated by locals to be around 70 to 80 years old. Well stocked with LMB, BG and Crappie. In the last week I have noticed a tremendous amount of small snails in the water along the bank. Are they something I should worry about? Should I stock some RES to control them? Would they survive this far north and are there any negatives to RES with my current population? Thanks in advance!

No negative effects to stocking RES and they will survive just fine in Nebraska waters. And yes, they love snails. Win-Win.

There are no negatives on the RES. However, everything in the pond eats everything that will fit in its mouth. You will need some good sized RES.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I am concerned the LMB and Crappie would eat a large portion of the RES before they grow big enough to survive. However, there is good cover(lots of grasses, etc) for the small fish to hide. Should I stock several times the recommended amount of RES per acre and hope some survive to adulthood? Or does anyone know where to purchase adult-sized fish? Back to my first question, are the snails a problem that I should even worry about? Thanks for the input!

Snails are hosts for a number of pests, swimmers itch, white/black grubs, etc. Reduce the # of snails and those problems will be minimized.

I thought I had read something about grubs living on snails and then attaching to fish. I seem to have lost the article. You just confirmed what I thought. Thanks.
