San Francisco Mulls Ban on Goldfish as Pets Updated: Friday, 17 Jun 2011, 7:21 AM CDT Published : Friday, 17 Jun 2011, 7:21 AM CDT
(FOXNews.com) - Goldfish, puppies, kittens and hamsters could be banned as pets under a bill proposed by the San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission, FOXNews.com reported Thursday.
The proposed ban is meant to discourage “impulse buys” of pets that sometimes end up at shelters, commission member Philip Gerrie said, adding that goldfish, guppies and other tropical fish were added to the list because of the “inhumane suffering of fish” and the way the fish are harvested.
"It causes animal suffering," Gerrie told FOX News Radio. "Whole reefs and ecosystems are being exploited for whatever might be marketable or sellable."
The Board of Supervisors considered a similar ban last year that would have included dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats and guinea pigs -– but not fish. That proposed ban was tabled last August. The supervisors said they were going to reconsider it in January of this year -- but did not.
The proposed fish ban has local pet store owners up in arms.
"The city is taking more and more control," said Ocean Aquarium owner Justin Hau told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They are very stupid."
The recommendation from the commission could be a tough sell among the Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Sean Elsbernd told the Chronicle he had doubts the new proposal would pass, calling it "another animal welfare idea that will end up in the dustbin of history and go absolutely nowhere."

Well I can.
San Francisco is much like a breakfast cereal, it's chock full of nuts and flakes. Even folks like DIED and I that live in California roll their eyes at the crazy stuff that goes on in SF.
Personally I think we should fence in San Francisco and charge admission to enter. Treat is as an interactive amusement park, an example of what happens when you allow the patients to run the asylum.

They should ban children too since they end up in shelters sometimes, and it would have the added benefit of preventing increased numbers of genetically predesposed crazies.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Minnesota State Central is only slightly less out of touch with reality. Luckily there are quite a few of us self-medicating in the rural areas.

CJ, that's all I could do is copy/paste. Anything more and it would have been deleted when Dave got up in the morning!
JHAP, when I lived out there, the ex and I flew to 'frisco, spent a few days, rented a convertible mustang and drove North to Morro Bay, hitting the aquarium and a few other places. Stayed somewhere near there (Carmel?),then we took the senic route home via Hwy. 1. That was enough for me! China town was interesting, as was the wharf. Saw a cabaret one night and you couldn't tell that the performers were guys. We did all the touristy things while there. One more thing that's crossed off the bucket list.

I haven't been to SF in years. And I don't miss it one bit.

Never been there. Have no desire to go because of reasons like this. It is about as crazy as the people who think we shouldn't eat plants becasue they have feelings

Some one should say something positive. How about those World Series winning San Francisco Giants?
Good morning Dave, I've checked the ships systems, and everything appears to be running normally.

I live inland from the SF Bay Area--the one and only reason I venture to SF is to watch the Giants once or twice per season. Birds of a feather do flock together and SF is a collection of queer birds, if you get my drift--a true cesspool.
