Hey now... a HBG and a BG rooming together? How long have the fish been co-habitating, and how's it working out?

Is Mikey seeing a decrease in HBG numbers Yet?

Those two specimens look mighty fine....

Oh yeah, I suppose I should say the "other" fish look pretty good also!

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Yes, he's seeing a decrease in HBG numbers. I believe the pond was stocked in late 2008/early 2009. I think the HBG were supposed to be BG, he had a bad stocking experience or 2......

He wants large BG and HSB wtih plenty of small LMB to take care of the BG spawn. The LMB in the pond now are feed trained, after they spawn we'll catch and transfer to mine, and my non-feed trained LMB will replacing them. The HSB are a blast to catch. I caught 2 and lost 2 more.

Hopefully the pellet hooked GC will learn their lesson and not feed on pellets, but start targeting some of the plants. He'll have to do something about the algae in his pond, the Chara and FA are starting to grow pretty quick. Cattails too.

Some of the BG that are swimming around are VERY thick.

Thanks George. I caught 2 of the 5 GC in the pond. They weren't too happy about the hook! The HSB DO pull a lot stronger than the LMB. I did lose one in the sunken tree branches, and had the hook pull out of another. I had to go down to a #10 Owner Mosquito hook to keep the SS floating. The HSB grab the pellet as they are headed towards the opposit shore.

George, you got help putting the bags in the car? Remember fresh batteries for the camera. I'd dying to see the pictures. Good luck!!

Scott, you did good! OK, well, great! smile

Please thank Mikey for allowing your fishing and photography fun, for me! I'd love to see a photo of his pond.

I'll be putting your photos to great use!

Just found out a couple of days ago (from the man himself)... that he put in a 13lb Rainbow Trout into a local fishing dam (of course, along with alot of other sized fish from his hatchery). Our state record is 14lb 7oz. So I gotta go try and get that 13lber! For practice, of course! In 5 days after stocking, there has only been about a total of 3 fish caught. Which I think is crazy. Guess you know what I'm taking to use as bait! smile

I'm excited!

Tell Mikey he has some nice looking fish! Thanks again to you both!

Scott, try a heavier hook for the HSB and let it sink - they go for a sinking Stubby.
As they get larger they will straiten a small wire hook – I use a #6 Mustad bait hook or sometimes a #1 “drop shot” hook.

Another tip - if you fish barbless, you will lose a Stubby almost with every fish - the "barbs" on the shank of bait hook will save the Stubby. After a fight with a HSB, the Stubby will loosen on the hook, so re-hook each time.

PS: no "hooker" jokes please ... grin

George, a #8 owner Mosquito hook would sink 1 or 2 Stubby pellets. I'd push one up so it was on the knot/eye of the hook, and the other was around the bend of the hook. Make it seem like 2 were floating down together.

You're right, I think almost all of my fish were caught on a sinking SS.

What are you force feeding that thing?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
