Well we have had nothing but rain here, almost 5 inches so as the first picture shows I am getting a lot of dirty water  And as you can see it has really raised the overall level to almost 5 " to the top of the damn.  What it tells me my overflow isn't low enough (my guess), but back to my original question. What is the impact of having this much water flow into the pond; water quality that is?

I found out the overflow was getting blocked. Pond dropped at least 5 inches after cleaning it. Water quality is still dirty (to much?) and scum is starting to redevelop.

Where exactly is the flow that is coming in via the culvert coming from? Hopefully you get that bare ground seeded and grown this year as obviously that doesn't help.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

It is coming from a water way and ground water, with only one small area (other end of the culvert) that is bare. I plan on putting landscape fabric and then stones on top of it. I would think there would be enough grass to filter the dirt?
The other bare ground has been seeded and the grass is starting to come, but with wind and rain the stand may not be the best.

I apologize for bumping this, but I am still interested in the impact of this much "dirty" water coming into the pond from an area pretty much protected by grass.

I apologize for bumping this, but I am still interested in the impact of this much "dirty" water coming into the pond from an area pretty much protected by grass. Sight feeding is inhibited but the fish can handle as long as it clears up within week or two. Actually they can handle turbid water but it's not optimum for feeding and fast growth. The down side is you're bringing in silt and possibly nutrients that could fire up algae and macrophytes. It's always a battle with new ponds. Been there done that. We me I was always a step behind nature no matter how fast I moved. You're only about 20 miles from me in Shipsi. Normally I'd say I'd love to meet you and give you a tour, but with a bad chest cold virus I'm not sure that would be a good idea for you.

You're only about 20 miles from me in Shipsi. Normally I'd say I'd love to meet you and give you a tour, but with a bad chest cold virus I'm not sure that would be a good idea for you. Yea I think I'll pass as I'm not anxious to catch anything, but I'm over this way several times a year. Maybe another time.
