One thing I've noticed that really seems to help the overall technique is keeping the fish underwater, in a well-oxygenated environment until the absolute last second before taking the photo. This seems to give three distinct benefits.

1. Often times the dorsal spines will "spike" which seems to give the fish a more lively appearance.

2. The colors of the fish will be more vivid, which greatly enhances the photo.

3. The fish releases in better condition, which gives you a chance to catch it again later!!

People like George have long been advocates of finding ways to keep the fish lively and vibrant during their brief trip out of water. This always yields a better photo.

Good tips Bruce - my O2 live well has been responsible for many successful HSB Catch&Release.
As you know they fight ‘til they die in warm weather w/o resuscitation - HSB are too valuable to catch only once.

Another good tip is a couple of drops of clove oil in the live well will put a frisky fish to sleep - gives time to weigh, measure and photograph. Todd Overton taught me this trick.

Is that dirt on your upper lip, or are you trying to butch up?

Dam nice fish bruce.....Id like to throw in that the same methods everyone has discussed above apply to hunting photos as well. Square up to the deer, elbows half bent etc.......Dont sit on its butt and fully extend the arms.

Yes. The fishing is seemingly getting better day by day.

So if I calculated correctly the LMB has a relative weight of 103% and the BG has a relative weight of 117%. Darn good I would say.

Is there any management going on at the Quarry Pond?

I'd say you're right on the money with the wR's. I'm not THE manager, but the feeding program (modest as it may be) has drastically improved the condition of the fish. I'm hoping to see an emerging yellow perch fishery by next year.

Darn nice fish from the quarry-type pond, Dr. Bruce. Thanks for posting.

What camera do you usually use for your photography Bruce? Or does that generally depend more on what you just happen to have around? I've been trying harder to always make sure I have a camera with me and then actually remembering to photograph the fish!

If you use something other than a point and shoot, do you like a specific lens, focal length, etc? It would seem to capture both the fish and the fisherman, increasing the F-stop would help to keep both the fish and angler in focus. Where as if you wanted just the fish in focus, keeping the F-stop low would help keep just the fish in focus.

I think that by far, the best fishing camera on the market, is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3. Having the capability of going to a 25mm focal length is the make or break for great fish photos. It allows you to focus on close subjects, which really makes the scales, colors, etc. really "pop" on the photo.
