Just watching a light rain hitting the pond this evening and began noticing these weird patterns in the water surface. Obviously the big square is influenced by my 5 disc station - but what about these other odd surface patterns? Never seen these before - but this is the first time I've paid attention JUST as it started raining. And yes - it would appear that the eoldea is spreading on the far side of the aeration station. Guess it is time to wade in and start that mechanical removal.

Don't know what the water currents are but be-careful of manual removal of Elodea. Elodea will spread like wildfire if you leave any fragments in the pond. I learned this the hard way in 2006. We manually removed tons (over 20 Polarius Ranger loads of it) in 2006 by hand raking. During the raking process the Elodea fragmented. In 2007 the Elodea was much worse.

ElksinWis, I think you're looking at dispursement of water causing movement due to the rain being a different temperature than the surface pond water. Most likely the rain is cooler than the pond water. That's my theory anyway. And/or the rain breaks the surface tension of the water causing it to move. I'll bet you could find the answer on the Internet though. Just don't ask this lady: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c6HsiixFS8

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

geez, i cant believe no one got it yet.
elks, those are the traces of pirates leaving yer pond before you came out and could see them....the traces are only visible in a light rain.
GSF are people too!

Gee - I didn't think I sounded QUITE that nuts when I asked the question. I guess I should have started with the things I know it ISN'T... aliens, gravitational disturbances caused by the mass of the rain cloud, pirates (where did THAT come from), water pixies, localized breakdown of the space-time continuum I'll buy the cold rain denser than the warm pond - just thought the patterns were funny (funny-strange not funny-haha). This thread and that YouTube post just made my otherwise crummy day! Thanks. Barry

ElkinsWI, I'm glad we brightened your day and that you have a good sense of humor. I have to say though, that I am very disapointed that you so easily dismiss the common causes of these and other pond phenomenom. Jhap and the GSA regularly mess with the space/time continuum, along with causing irritating gravitational disturbances when they play with the deathstar...Many of us think the GSF lovers are aliens, but you need to ask Cecil to be sure, he's the resident expert on the need for tinfoil hats... As for the sneaky pirates and water pixies...well you must still be too young to have actually seen the little buggers yet, but if you manage your pond long enough, you'll believe soon enough! (booze makes them easier to see as well)

Actually the truth be know my explanations are always sane and rational.

Hi ElksInWi Neighbor (I'm just West of Appleton), Nice looking pond pics. I've noticed the same type of thing as well over the aerators, but haven't noticed it elsewhere. How deep is your 5 station vertex in that picture? How much air are you pumping to it? The pattern on the water looks about maybe 30' square. Is that about the size of it? Just trying to get a feel for how my aerator is doing in comparison and the surface disturbance makes the patterns easy to see.

Hi Jeff.
The station is at ~5-6 feet (haven't checked the water rise with all the rain). I'm running a MEDO LA-120 linear pump into 5/8" line. At that depth, the manuf. chart says I should be pushing between 3.5 and 4 CFM which means I'm right on the edge of supplying enough per disc.
That said - I can clearly see that all 5 are producing.
As to the area of the disturbance - your guess is as good as mine. The bouy in the middle is a 1/2 gallon OJ PET bottle - but a quick "width of a pencil" check against the pic on my screen says it is more like 20-25' on a side.

PS - in last night's epic flood, I could see no trace of pirates on the pond. Evidently the torrent was too much for them! :P
