My brother caught this big-momma smallie about five years ago on our annual trip to Basswood Lake in the BWCAW of Northern Minnesota. I was reminded of the catch many times during this year's trip ...
I don't remember the exact measurements, but I think it was somewhere near 21" long, and almost the same length around! She was practically oozing eggs when he caught her, so we quickly got her back in the water and revived her. Our guide estimated her to be about 7.5 lbs and said it was the largest smallie she had seen caught on Basswood. If she was 7.5 lbs, she was only a half pound off the state record.
Any thoughts on weight based on the picture? I wish we had taken a photo of her belly because you wouldn't believe how thick she was...
Carl Spackler: "This place got a pool?" Ty Webb: "Pool and a pond. Pond would be good for you..."
I could buy off on 7 or 7.5 pounds just due to the girth.
Thing is a football.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Easy 7-pound+ smallie Dan – what a pig???? Compared to a Texoma 21 inch certified 5.66 lbs, your brother’s smallie is twice the girth. NICE!!!

Hey Dan, here is a pic of a 21.5" I caught 3 years ago, about 20 miles west of Basswood Lake, so it is a good geographic comparison. Unfortunately, I never got a weight or a girth on the fish, but I estimated it to be about 5.5lbs.
Scott, my 21 inch smallie weighed 5.66 lbs on a certified scale, and was "normal" size and agrees with the IBN calculator of 5.5 lbs. Dan's brother's fish is a "beast" with extreme girth.
I find the IBN calculator right on the money taking into consideration for above or below RW's.
