Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Renovating a Pond or Lake? Anyone use a Pirahna Pump ??

I have been researching how to get the sediment off the bottom of my pond wthout draining the pond and cam e acroosed something interesting http://www.piranhapumps.com/index.html

I was thinking about something like this before I ran acrossed the PIrahna... Why couldn't a fella just use a trash pump on a portable dock and do the same thing as this. I am going to try this method in the next couple weeks . I was just wondering if anyone already did it and itf you had any tips...

I did suck up a bunch of sand while using my 4" trash pump when we renovated the pond. I think that we wouldn't have filled up the hose with sand if we weren't pumping about 15' up an incline.

As long as you can keep the sediment/sand from piling up in the hose, you're good to go. We plugged the inlet side.....

It will be interesting to see how much sand/muck you get compaired to water. I would think you would loose a good portion of water during the process, while only a small % of muck. Not saying it cant be done, i just think it may take longer than you initally are planning for.

The water loss isn't a big deal really. I can raise and lower the depth of my pond by using the creek that originates behind the pond and runs about 30 ft. from it.

Well, that solves that part. However it would be nice if you could post what the % of loss is so everyone will have an idea of how productive this way is compaired to other more mechanical options.

I bought a Pirana pump system a few years ago. It really works good on silt. It cost about 8K with all the hoses, etc. Want to rent it?

Man I would LOVE to rent it, But I live a few states away from Ia. I do see a small business side job for you though. Since you already own it why not use it to make some extra $$$?

I am too busy to do it. It will fit on 8' utility trailer pretty easily. I would be about 15 hours drive each way, or about $500 trucking each way. Want to do a road trip?
