Sorry Cecil, please correct me on the GSF thing.

Hey guys, I understand your concerns over HOA etc. Here's the deal though, there has not been a single lot built on in over a year. The closest home is 5 lots away from the pond and that is on the other small pond shown a few posts back. With the way the real estate market is, it could be years before my parents even have a neighbor. Also, the pond is on their property so the kids won't be in neighbors yards even after houses are built. Lastly, the ponds were made with the idea of stocking them for fishing and that was one of the selling points of the property before the developer started going bankrupt. As for the slope, I was talking about the pond itself. Rather than an immediate steep drop off, the entire perimeter of the pond is a zero depth (or close to it) gradual slope. The whole idea is to get this thing stocked for my kids. We go to a local pond where they will catch 40-60 small bluegill on a summer morning, and I'd rather do it at my parents so they can spend time with Grandpa and Grandma. My 7 year old was having a blast catching BG's on his fly rod last year, and I'm excited for the upcoming spring season. One other thing, what's a GSF (I'm a newbie) WHO actually owns the Pond?

Sorry Cecil, please correct me on the GSF thing. No need to correct you. I think you meant hybrid bluegill as in GSF X BG but just didn't type that.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The bank and then whoever ends up buying the development?

So harsh, JKB!???
With the plan going belly up, there might not be anyone around to care about what you do with the pond. C'ept the bankruptcy court, and other Federal agencies LIKE the DEQ!

I thought the HOA's I have dealt with over the years were bad... Sounds like I've dealt with nothing. I'm down here in NC at my future in-laws and they live in a golf course community. Nothing but ponds owned by the HOA. Except for the occasional neighbor who calls and complains about me fishing them. I have enjoyed myself thoroughly fishing them over the last couple years. Usually the security guard comes down to see who I am, I explain I am visiting and he says, oh OK, well have fun and catch a big one for me.
I've seen many HOA's ban the use of boats, wading, swimming, walking on ice, but I cannot think of any I have seen that outright ban fishing. If your land abuts the pond's edge, it'd be real tough to prevent you from fishing the pond I would think. I know as a police officer, I am not enforcing that. It's a civil matter and if the HOA is bankrupt, I doubt them paying money for a lawyer to sue over someone fishing is going to be high on their list of things to spend money on. I suppose anything is possible though.

With a pond that size, I would toss in 2 or 3 pounds of fatheads. That's about $20 to $30. Then I would catch all of the BG that the kids could catch and that I could haul. Then I would stock about fifty 4 to 6 inch channel cats. That's maybe another $25 to $50. Lusk says OK to stock cats with the forage.
That pond is too small to stock bass and WAY too small for crappie.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I found the pond on bing maps I'm figuring it's about .2 acres. Bing Aerial View It may come up as an empty field at first, but if you zoom in at all it switches to a newer aerial view. Thanks for all the info. I'll be getting FHM's ASAP and then will come the BG's either stocked from a hatchery or our fishing.

I passed a pond in a nasty looking delapitated trailer park today with a no fishing sign, as I was driving to a couple of taxidermists I do wholesale work for. I would have loved to put a sign next to it saying," Who would want to fish this dump? I'd be afraid the fish are on meth."

Thanks for all the advice guys. Just a quick update. There were a couple of meetings and the park district is going to take over the upkeep on the ponds as the developer has gone belly up. This seems to be good news. They are going to seed the muddy areas within the next 2 weeks and install aerators (which we found out is a mandatory law in this suburb) within the next month. They will however remove them in Nov every year so we won't have aeration in the winter. I also got more info on the pond itself. It is 1.81 acre feet and about 10 feet deep in the center. How big of a problem would freezing temperatures in the Chicagoland area be for fish? I'm planning on getting the fatheads in next week as things are finally warming up around here. Thanks for everything
