Looks like we might get a little snow tonight ... and tomorrow, and tomorrow night, and into Sunday morning . . .

The pond has been frozen over for over a week.

Time to go fill another trailer with firewood, and time to put the snow blade and chains on the tractor. The deer is still hanging in the shed and isn't even butchered yet.

Where's JHAP when I need him??

We're getting a forecast of 6 inches minimum starting tonight and into tomorrow, with continued snow and possibly more accumulation through Monday. The long range is showing that we might have snow on Christmas, too, for the first time in awhile! We're just outside the bright white band that looks like it's gonna smack you directly over there in the mountains! I'm envious, Ken!

I was out at the farm today and both ponds are frozen - last I was there a little less than a week ago, that was not the case. Pretty exciting, especially since we bought our oldest daughter ice skates to use on our small pond! First winter owning the place, so looking forward to watching the season pass out there!

Good luck with the snow this weekend and enjoy!

Lucky dog! Our last big snow was about six years ago, maybe 7, when we got around 2 feet in one snowfall. It was awesome! The whole town was shut down - heck, most of north central WV was shut down! - for about a week as the municipalities tried to figure out what to do with all that snow. They ended up just waiting for most of it to melt!

Enjoy the snow, Ric!

Travis -- you must just be living right to have this weekend off. I sat down for a few minutes and watched the end of the Channel 4 news about 6:30. The snow hadn't even started and they were crashing into each other between the Mixing Bowl and Dale City. Although, maybe they were doing that because you weren't there to watch over them.

Todd -- I think you'll get your wish. The kids should really enjoy it. If I hadn't been so busy trying to get ready for this thing, I should have picked up the grandkids, as we've got lots better sledding here than where they live.

Getting ready has been a bummer. I went to put the blade on the tractor, and the three point hitch was leaking fluid like crazy. Luckily, it was just a loose fitting -- but in a near impossible place to tighten. Now the light bar lights won't come on. It looks like water got into the switch and froze. I just got in from getting the snow blower working. It hadn't been run in over three years. Even though I had run the gas out of it when I last put it away, there must have still been some in the carburetor. I had to take it all apart and clean it before it would run.

Oh well, now I'm set. It can snow all it wants -- just not so much that I can't get down to the barn tomorrow to get the deer butchered. Sounds like some of us could get more than 20 inches. Its down to 24 degrees here.

I keep looking at the map and fixating on the word PARALYZING. In the D/FW area, that means about 1.5 inches.

A quarter inch of ice is all it takes to create havoc. A foot of snow is easy.

All I can say is this must be one big storm as we are getting 1 to 2 inches from the same storm in all the way back west into Indiana. It's definitely white out there. If it reaches back this far the east coast must be getting hammered!

It has now been snowing for just 12 hours, and we are expecting another 12-20 hours of snow before it stops.

This is what my front deck looks like as of 9:00 AM EST.

These are whiskey barrel planters outside the kitchen window:

If you don't hear from me until April, it is because I'm stuck in a snow bank. I'm about to go start plowing. I think I'll need the snow blower to make a path to the tractor.

Edit: I think they got it right. This will be paralyzing. We've already canceled church and the kid's Christmas program for tomorrow morning. Imagine this at D/FW! WV, western MD, and northern VA at least have good snow removal equipment.

We've only got about 3-4" here in Murrysville PA.

Can't really tell from the forecast how much more we'll get but it's still snowing.

It's fluctuating between thin and thick snow flakes.

These lazy porch-hound dogs won't even go outside!

I think I have to revise my intitial report to say we've got about 6" of snow thus far.

My Akita that is in the Spitz breed family, which includes huskies etc. thinks snow is awesome, and likes to rump around in it! She wants to stay out forever and just play in it!

Cat are you located where you get the upslope effect that typically enhances the snowfall?

I can still see the grass poking up thru the snow, although it's still falling.

I really like the way things look when it snows without any wind!

The dogs are out now and having fun.

Just took the wife and daughter to go out to make the dogs want to go out.

We have 3 inches of perfect snowman snow here right now.

I know, 'cause I just got cold and sore feeding the livestock in it.

14" and still coming down hard... Gonna take the dog out for a romp here in a bit. She went nuts last night in the snow when we only had a couple inches.

It's fun hunting deer when the snow is approaching your knees. Even more fun to drag them out after they're down!

We're at 14" and still coming down hard as well. Awesome! My truck bed is filled with construction debris from the little barn I'm building at our farm and the snow is mounded up on top of that, so I threw in 200 pounds of sand bags and off I went! Lots of vehicles stuck off the side of the road, in ditches, in snow banks. The plows aren't even making any real appreciable headway. This is the best snowfall we've had in about 6 or 7 years. Gonna load the family up and take a ride, maybe see if we can make it to the farm. The ponds both froze this past week, so I'm interested to see how it all looks with better thana foot of snow on it! I love winter! Will post some pics later today.

Be careful Todd. If you ice isn't that thick on the pond, heavy snow can cause it to crack and hydrate and be unsafe.
