Hey guys.
Just a quick question regarding Salmon.
I now have my large pond stocked with brown trout and they have been doing great for the past few years.
Since my other pond is also stocked with brown trout I was thinking about a different type of fish for the larger one. (700' X 500' & 12' deep, spring fed that stops for two months in summer, lots of aeration from wind)

Is it possible to have salmon in there? From what I have read so far it might be a water temprature issue???

Any thoughts would be great.
Located in East coast of canada.

Thanks.....

slang, from what I've read water quality requirements for Salmon and trout are very similar. Here's some info.

By the way, very scenic ponds you have.

Kokanee Salmon are stocked in some lakes here in the Adirondacks and I know of one 10 miles from my pond that has them. They seem to be the preferred variety in landlocked lakes and ponds.

AP, picked it. Pink salmon may also adapt to pond life as well as Atlantic salmon. None will get any bigger than trout in a pond though.

Cool!
So my brown trout get about 3-4 pound by the second year so I might get 3 pound salmon?

Probably the deep pond 20'+ would be better for the salmon than the 12 foot one?

The shallow one is bigger but the water stays cooler in the deep one and I have a pump that continously pumps water from about 10' below the surface and about 3' into the air for aeration and stratification control.

I guess it seems like I might be able to do this after all?

I will probably have more questions as I look into this a bit more.

Thanks guys........

Experimentation is really the only way to find out.

What kind of forage do salmon take? This sounds like an interesting project.

Kokanee salmon feed on plankton and insects in the wild, but they feed them pellets in the hatcheries so I guess they would do fine.
It would be an interesting experiment to see how well they grow compared to trout.

I doubt if he'll be able to find pinks or any pacific salmon to stock in New Brunswick. Most likely landlocks will be the only thing he can get locally. It wouldn't surprise me if pacific salmon are not permitted there either.

For all intensive purposes landlocks and atlantics are very similar to brown trout and are closely related. They are quite acrobatic and I doubt you'll land everyone you hook.

Slang,

Have you tried brooks? I've gotten them to over 3 lbs. as only 2 year old fish. 19 1/4 inches. Unfortunately my pond should be cooler for the brooks although browns do really well in the pond.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I guess I have some questions to ask the local natural resorces dept about what and where to get stock.

One think kind of related, my browns would not bite this year hrdly at all and I couldn understand why until a frien of mine which is an avid fisherman came to try his luck and after about 45 minutes he called me over and said "thats why they arnt biting" and pointed to a band about two feet wide of pollywogs or baby frogs that rimmed the entire 1100' perimeter of the pond.

As the pond matures the ecosystem seems to be taking hold. I would think that maybe there is lots of food to be had and maybe the salmon might like frog legs?
LOL

Thanks again.....
