I own roughly 21 acres in northern Alabama. One of the best features is a small pond (roughly 1 acre) that is stocked with bass and bluegil. I would like to make the pond substantially larger (maybe 10-12 acres) but have no idea where to begin. I see talk of topo maps but wouldn't know where to go to get one. I also have no idea how to find a construction company in the area that has experience in building fishing ponds rather than farm ponds (bowls for cows to drink from). Where do I start?

See the NRCS and ask them to come out and look the site over. They will have a list of local contractors. Talk to the contractors and ask for references. Be sure and check the references. Go look at their work.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The most popular place to get Topo maps online is www.topozone.com

It also looks like Alabama has topos online at
http://www.gsa.state.al.us/gsa/GIS/DATA.html

I also like Nasa's woldwind program which can be downloaded at
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
