IS catfish inbreeding a big problem? Please don't say "don't let catfish breed in your pond" ;\)

Not an expert, but I've heard that it gets worse, the further south you go.

We've been trying to rid the pond of Old Three Eyes for years.

What about fish hatcheries. IF a fish hatchery raises say flathead catfish, would there be a bigger chance of them inbreeding because of there small numbers and large size?

IIRC it is rare for catfish to breed in ponds. This is why most people consider them a put and take fishery in their pond

I do believe you are correct, however,my CC sucessfully spawned in my pond about 2 yrs ago.It was a really cool event to observe.Unfortunately,I wasnt smart enough to take pics of the courtship.
Point is,dont assume they wont spawn just because of location. As Bill says...it all depends!

CC will spawn in most ponds, but the fry are usually unable to avoid predation.
