I guess this has something to do with adjusting fish populations?
The long legged blue devil has been visiting my pond. The last couple of days, I have seen the great blue heron lurking around the pond.
I noticed the PS don't show themselves and I haven't seen a trout since the devil came to visit.
I used to have frogs every couple of feet around the pond and they have also been depleted.
Any suggestions on dealing with this praetor?

Scruffy, some people string fishing line across their ponds to discourage Herons.

Some people think of them as chicken hawks when you are raising chickens. I personally believe in taking care of the problem.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Search for heron threads, you can read a number of control methods - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I'd love to deal with the devil and use the feathers for my salmon fly tying. The problem is in NH this bird is protected and to have a dead one is a crime.
The fishing line idea sounds like it would work with my pond, kind of like an invialble grid.
Thanks, Theo I'll do a saerch.

scruffy fish:
They are protected here as well, but the state will issue a permit to shoot them, Cecil has gotten the permit before.

I believe Tom G might have a solution for them that could involved mines in the ground. The GBH will move around the pond... step... step... step... BOOM. Is is illegal to have many many small pieces of a GBH around your land?

Just thinking. Due to coyote problems and depradations, some people might consider leg hold traps baited with a fresh fish.

The coyotes were bad around here until I went woodchuck hunting next to my pond with the .222 rem., coyotes avoid my pond now, and there are surpisingly few woodchucks too......

Speaking of coyotes, I haven't seen one recently. I know they are still around, because I lost a cat few weeks ago.
Their not as plentyful as last year. They would come early in the morning and eat the pears that dropped from our tree. Sometimes there would be as many as ten or more. I wouldn't have beleived it until I saw them eating the fruit.
Another animal I have little use for.

Wow! Must have been a family group. The most I have ever seen together at one time is 8. I think our north eastern coyotes are far more pack oriented as compared to their western cousins... Bigger too!
