Oh and while you're at it Pink Fresh Water River Dolphins. I would really, really, like a dolphin swimming around my pond.

There was an ad a couple of years ago of a someone that had produced several thousand 6 to 8 inch feed trained walleye for sale that had been raised in indoor tanks in Iowa. That might be something some pond owners would snap up in a flash.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil

Yep - one could sell a truckload on this forum I'd wager. That's an ingenius effort, IMO. I would buy some at nearly any price.

Dave - you're right - I read that too...but I think that assessment was made far PRIOR to the emergence of this large market of private water managers. I think the demand is there for this niche species if marketing properly - but have no idea of the costs involved in producing these fish.

Bobby Glennon a biologist at Malone and Sons was producing some triploid crappie experimentally. If I remember right he said he wasn't haven't a lot of success and thought monosex crappie would be a better way to go.

Apparently there are genetic tests to determine sex in fingerlings as a researcher Hang-Ping Wang at the Piketon Research center in Ohio has come up with tests to aid him in producing Super Male bluegills. See:

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sci...G3_R6DKUAD.html

Perhaps any fish in the sunfish family could be produced into super males without any hormone residue as Hang-Ping Wang does?

Even with my cretin brain when it comes to understanding genetics, as long as I had a way to test sexes of immature fish I think I could produce super male fish. If that's the case I know Todd Overton could do it. Are you listening Todd? Or simply if he got his hands on the technology to differentiate sexes of fingerlings, he would have a gold mine on his hands for pond stocking.

Rex,

After reading all this I am glad you made it to my house in Terre Haute at all! Thanks for the great fish and after I get my 1200 gallon pond complete I may have something to grow out some decent fry. Go Blue!

Is it the male or female crappie that grows larger? I am thinking female, but am not sure...

Agreed, but I gotta tell you I'm rather hopeless on the triploid hybrid search...I might just wait until next Spring and go crazy catching 6-10" fish on their beds and transfer them. It goes without saying these fish will only be from fellow pond owners and never from a public watershed.

I talked to a local guy - said only way he'd try triploids is if I could guarantee 10-15,000 qty in sales. I know I'd take 500, that leaves A LOT of work for me to do.

If we could get a standing order of 10-15,000 fish, I will do my best to make this happen.

I could easily afford 50 and probably 100.

Mono-sex female crappie are projected to become available in the Fall of 2011.

I just confirmed a source availability this Fall for 3-4", mixed-sex Hybrid Black Crappie and the off-spring are readily controllable in small ponds. Triploids ain't gonna happen! Only get about 50 fish out of every 100,000 eggs! Far too much risk and expense when a secure market is already established. I'll work out routes as the orders come in.

Rex - Barring any research to the contrary of what I've learned thus far count me in on the HybC. Any potential orders besides myself at this point?
