pond is a little bigger than 1/2 acre and 9' deep and is almost 1/2 full. I have verry little frass around the pond from the construction process and have planted seed but growing grass is a slow process. With no grass my pond stays muddy from the clay. Is it too early to put FHM in to start a food chain? I have also planted a few plants dwarf saggitaria and corkscrew eel grass. If its ok to put the FHM in now what will they eat. I dont have a feeder yet, will I need to have the feeder up and running forthe fhm. What should I do? pics at http://www.fotki.com\tz

It wouldn't make a lot of sense to put the FH's in at this time. That said, I would PERSONALLY not be able to restrain myself. I would probably blow about $20.00 on a couple of pounds of fatheads.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
Without a sense of urgency, Nothing ever gets done.

All due respect Dave but I say put the FHM in now. What would be the point in waiting? This gives them a chance to reproduce all summer long before introducing predatory fish.
They will eat plankton, insect larve, all kinds of things that have already started to establish in your new pond. If it were me, I would put the BG fingerlings in at the same time if your ultimate plan is to have them. There's plenty of water, it's stocking season... Lets get it on.

Blaine, the reason I said it didn't make sense is because he is 1/2 full (no problem there), muddy water and no vegetation. Neither BG fingerlings or FHM really do well without a good phytoplankton and zoo plankton base.
The reason I said I would do it is because I am impatient, of low character and seldom do things that make good sense. I have very little tolerance of water without fish.

I am the type that waits. It is darn hard to look at a perty pond with no fish in it though. If you put a couple pounds of FHM in and they die, you're out 20 bucks. No biggie...
Not sure how your aquatic plants will do with all the suspended clay in the water... You may lose them. But at least you picked good species to plant should they survive. If not, wait til the water clears and plant more. What was the source of the dwarf saggitaria and corkscrew eel grass you planted?

OK, I am new to this pond thing but have read more than I want to
on making my dream pond with lunkers.
Here is where I am at. I have a 3 1/2 acres (spoon shape) pond that is currently 1/2 full I would guess. Average 4-5' with a dep hole of over 8' right. I am looking for an average of 9' overall.
Water ph is running around 8 and the water color is a nice green unless after a rain. (little grass on burm thus far)
I want to start by stocking BG & FHM but am concerned about air preditors. Do I have enough water to keep the "water turkies" from eating my fish?

Get rid of the WT. TZ and 3 1/2 go ahead and put in the FH and let them start. Hand feed them a little and they will do fine in a new pond.

also, I plan on putting a feeder on my pier. I have looked at many on the websites. I knw the TH feeders are good stuff but pricey. What about the Moultre or the Aqua Pro.

tz666 = TZ the other poster with the same question.
There are a # of ways to discourage WT from hanging around. I am not sure they bother with FH as they are to small. If you are half full and don't anticipate the water going down much and assuming it will continue to fill I would go ahead and put in the FH. Not much risk if you have green water. Not knowing your plan I hesitate to say how many FH. Ten lbs per acre is a good amount to start. I have several AP 75D feeders that work great with the new timer.

Yes they have a new timer. Mine throw in a V shaped pattern about 50 ft.
