Last year I made a request to be on the list of the ponds that the local fisheries office will come out and perform an electrofishing survey. I called yesterday to reaffirm my wishes and make sure I was a priority. I am looking forward to it, it's not a guarantee that they are coming but they said they do few private ponds a year when they can fit them in. This will probably answer some of the remaining questions I have about the pond and give me some firm management needs and goals.

If they come get, some pictures of the event and post them along with the results. Electrofishing is some cool stuff!

Eric I thought you were libeterian (me too btw). The state here used to do free seine checks. If you knew someone higher up you could get electrofishing on private pond. They are out of it now but.... Unless things are diff in LA you get what you pay for. It usually states some very basic concepts, if ever they found crappie recommendaitons were to drain and start over (may or may not be best advice). They do not ask you goals. So if trying to grow big bass they would stil recommend you take 10 lbs of bluegill for every lb of bass. Old school stuff.

My point is if you want it done right you might look into privae consultants in the area. I know the main things I ask first is what are goals for the pond? Also make sure they have good reputaiton and submit a report. You are paying for that pieice of paper. Ok12 got no report then when he got it full of very genral info you can get from internet search no spefic goals for him. A good private biologist will save you money in the long run.

Strange to me LA will shock some private water while requiring an expensive grass carp permit from pondowner.

Greg last I checked MS will do an electroshock when they have time if you go through a long series of steps to see if they can id the problem with other data first. I would not count on being able to get to that point as I think they are trying to phase out of the service. They may have done so by now.

Greg, they do it on a limited basis. I call about once a month to make sure they still know I'm on the list. They told me today it would be summer when they did it. Due to my line of work, I will most likely be able to be present when the shocking of my pond is done so I can see what happens and the fish first hand. We have a very cordial and helpful local fisheries biologist who has taken the time to answer all my questions when I call him. Today we spoke for about 15 minutes. He never rushes me off the phone or anything. Today he called me back with an answer to a few questions he did not know himself.

Eric it sounds like you got a good one. Summer is not the best time to shock but free is a good price.
