To be sure, Bill Duggan is the King of boiled peanuts. I have not had the distinct pleasure of sampling his product, but others on this forum have and RAVE about 'em.

Good to hear from you Bill. Best peanuts - you bet. Make a bunch and bring them with you to the convention.

Greg,

The acidic ponds I dealt with this past October had me doing lots of research. The culprit was an abundance of pyrite in the watershed. Pyrite is more commonly known as fool's gold and can be associated with many rock types (quartz, sedimentary, etc). Pyrite is chemically known as iron sulfide (FeS2). The sulfide dissociates from the iron and forms sulfuric acid. The ponds I dealt with were extremely clear and had pH's as low as 2.8. The other sign was layers of red/ornange sediments deposited here and there on the bottom. You guessed it.....iron. In my case, the sulfides were linked with the iron, however, sulfides can be linked with other elements and cause similar results when put into solution.

The conductivities in these ponds were also extremely high. I assume this is due to the fact that the low pH dissolves so many types of minerals, metals etc, just like Rainman mentioned with the aluminum. I could also see the bottom of the ponds, one of which had 18'. Interesting stuff.

Banks,
probably something similiar in this case but not iron sulfide. No iron although we that in most stagnant creeks around here. It basically looks like stone mountain under the water. THinkinig the culprit was something they used in mining process.
