Looks like a plain ol' rock bass to me. Am I missing something?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Rock bass are cool. I caught three of them yesterday.

How do others find the taste of Rock Bass? I caught a bunch last year in Rock Creek (Feeder to Kankakee River in Illinois) and the taste and texture was awful. While I started in the summer, the last batches I caught were in leg numbing cold water (I now have a new set of waders that I have yet to try). I would catch them and then place them in a small collapsible cooler with some ice bottles in it. Sometimes the fish were still alive when I got home to clean them. 'Uhh why is that cooler on the counter moving?' Don't ask honey. Any body else have problems with the flavor of Rock Bass?

I'm obviously really slow and optimistic. For at least 40 years I've been hoping that "this batch" of rock bass would be good to eat.
I don't know how many times I've mixed a few of them in with a big fry of bluegill, pumpkinseed, green sunfish, crappie, etc., only to bite into one and say "yuck!" They look great when filleted. They never have any odor. But, they are always mushy and off-taste.
It hasn't mattered whether I've caught them in the frozen north or the sunny south, they all have the same taste and texture, which is not at all like other fish in the family.

Well then I'm not the only one. I'm really disappointed, since they are so abundant and I catch so few bluegill/sunfish or catfish out of the creek. I can pick up the occasional smallie, but I won't eat them, too good of a fight, too long to grow out. I get the occasional carp also, but I'm too American to eat them. This does take some of the fun out of fishing this creek for me, since I love to eat what I catch. Oh well, it's close to home and it's still better than working.

It looks like a red "x" to me.
