I just stocked a new 1 acre pond with fingerling bluegill. What do they eat? Do I need to feed?

You dont need to feed them, but they will grow alot faster if you do. Feeding is also another avenue to enjoy your pond as well. You can observe your fish and they will become your friends.

Purina mills makes a complete line of fish food, but I would start out with their gamefish chow or their aquamax grower 400. Any purina mills dealer in your area can get fish food added to their weekly order

Welcome to PB. What other fish are you going to put in the pond and what are your pond goals? They were most likely eating pelleted food at the hatchery and could be kept on feed easier if you start now.

Bass, shell crackers, and chanel cats. My goal is family fishing fun. The fish are so small it doesn't seem like pellets would be right for them.

Oh yeah, I have subscribed to the magazine and ordered the pond management handbook. I have used the Ky Dept of Fish and Wildlife for most of my info up until now. They have been great. Their stocking program is annual and starts in October. I didn't want to wait.

Ken...

The fish will hammer away at the pellets even if they are too big for them. Don't worry. They always find a way to eat.

Hi Ken, Ky.Dept. of Fish & Wildlife will provide Bluegill, and Channel Cat in the fall & Largemouth Bass in the spring.I don't think they provide you any Redear Sunfish. You'll need to buy them from a private hauler. I would recommend you stock them at the same time in the fall. IMHO, you would have been better to have bought fat head minnows by the pound first. Hopefully, your original BG wont be large enough to prey on the Dept's BG when you get them. I would still buy minnows NOW to jump start your LMB groth. Good luck.
