Hi

New member, long time lurker \:\)

I want to spray the water shield and lily pads behind my house with liquid 2,4 d. I put 8 oz in 2 gallons of water and sprayed a 50 sq ft area and it looks like its working.....they definetely arent as happy as they were a few days ago.

My question is this.....using this method, what would you recommend for the application rate? I really just guessed at the 4 ounces a gallon because i couldn't find any other directions. I also read on a board somewhere that you can add vegetable oil to the mixture as a surfactant. Does this sound right? If so, how much per gallon do you suggest?

I tried Navigate last year and it worked, but $157 a bag is a little steep for my pocket.

Any help is appreciated!
Jim

8 oz in 2 gal of water, applied over 50 sq ft is equivalent to treating 1 surface-acre with 54.45 gal of 2,4-D in 1,742 gal of water-carrier. That is a lot of chemical and a lot of water-carrier!
The first question is: What strength was the 2,4-D Amine concentrate?
Assuming the 2,4-D was labeled for aquatic-use (?), it would have contained 4 lbs of active-ingredient per gal of concentrate. If that is correct, your application was grossly over the labeled rate, and the plants are probably reacting more so to "chemical shock" than to the product's typical mode of action (unchecked cellular elongation - aka "the plant grows itself to death").
IMO, a topical application of HABITAT @ 3/4 oz per gal of mix-water, would have been a better option - since I doubt if a liquid 2,4-D topical-treatment will provide thorough root-kill of water-shield (granulars attack through the root-system).
Also, I don't think vegetable oil is water-soluble. A methylated seed oil, in a water-soluble formulation, is a much better choice for wetting and leaf-cuticle absorbtion (@ 3/4 oz per gal of mix-water).

It is an 11% solution that is for aquatic use. I feel like an idiot asking the app rate, but the directions are talking in quarts and acre feet and im just doing some topical spraying. the pond has white and yellow lilies, spadderdock and watershield.

My major problem is cost.....the pond is 5 acres and the homeowners association wont foot any part of the bill. I'm trying to find a cheap way to knock alot of it back (with me doing the work). I bought some navigate last year for behind my house and it did great.

I'm unfamiliar with an 11% aquatic-labeled 2,4-D. What is the brand-name, and in what container-size was it purchased?

I have used 2,4D at the same dilution rate. I add some spreader sticker, then spray till I just wet the surface of the Target Weed. I pump up the sprayer as much as I can & use as fine a mist as I can. Seems like 2gal should have covered more than 50sqf. I then expect a very slow kill. Rodeo is still my favorite.
