I was doing some calculations on how much dirt was going to be needed to create a little 500 square foot pond.
Somehow I ended up with the new dirt volume to be around 600 cubic feet. How does that equate to say....the capacity of a bobcat bucket? And how much time would one expect it to take to sculpt and conpact that much dirt?
Silly question, yes?

Isn't a small bobcat bucket a 1/2 cubic yard? That would take several bucket loads to move 600 ft3

Silly question, yes? Bruce, a 500 sq ft area pond would only be 1.2 feet deep (ave) if you only excavate 600 cubic feet from the hole. FWIW, the capacity of the front end loader bucket on my 24 hp tractor is about 1/3 cubic yard (or 9 cubic feet). The bucket on my excavator's skid loader (Case, not a Bobcat) is two or three times that much.

Bruce,
The size of the bobcat will make a big difference in total time. I would guess an average cycle time of 1 to 4 minutes. The more packing done and the longer it takes to fill the bucket the higher the cycle time. Figuring a 1 yd machine and 4 min cycles would produce 15 cu.yds. an hour. That comes out to 40 hours for 600 cy.

There are alot of different buckets but these are probably the most common used on a bobcat for digging.
Construction/Industrial (C/I) Buckets Bucket Specs
74" bucket 15.4 to 20.5 cubic ft 80" bucket 16.7 to 22.4 cubic ft
