A question came my way pertaining to a friends pond...

He says his bluegill (aka unidentified panfish) are all near the surface, no longer skiddish, and if caught "their eyes 'r BUGGIN' out!" The ponds pretty shallow and warm, but he gave no other clues, although well water may be involved (he's not sure).

I told him its probably low DO and low pH but i'd like a second opinion because of the bug-eyes. IIRC, that can be a chemistry issue, but forgive my ailing mind for doubting everything it comes up with

I'm interested in the nitrogen theory, don't nitrogen levels increase with heat? A shallow warm pond would be very low on O2 (thus the vertical migration of fish) and the pop-eye could be frome the nitrogen... I suppose a pathogenic disease would be fairly probable too in a warm pool of water - thanks for the link
