I decided to try for a big batch of BG one more time this afternoon, since the air temp got up to 80 degrees. Alas, the water has cooled down a little too much for the BG to remain in their Summer positions. I only caught a half-dozen small ones. But I did get what I term a super-slam, 5 species in one outing, as I also landed a CC, a LMB, a RES, and one of the HSB stocked 1 year and 4 days ago. They were nominally 8"-10" last October; I think this fellow must have been eating pellets pretty good to make it to 16" and 2lbs 5oz in a year. He was more than enough to make it a good day fishing.

George,
Your in TX so you might be able to find this. I used to use it in Okla. Look for Delong blood bate. It comes in a tub like a butter tub. It is thick. We used to cut squares and push the eye of the treble hook threw the square and put it on the swivel. I would love to find a pond with some big cats in it. That would be fun.

I did the same thing yesterday morning George while my eyes were still blury, how did that thing get inside the glass!
I guess Theo just wants to bug us.
I've been thinking of copying it and putting on selected emails.
I wish I had the tenacity of GSF!

Nice wiper Theo. They've really turned on the past week or so. Mine are about the same size as yours and it scares the crickets out of me every time they hit.

I've got you beat Theos.
I got to camp at my property from early Friday afternoon til Sunday early afternoon.
On Friday afternoon, I hit (6) species as follows: SMB, LMB, Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, Brook Trout, and Brown Bullhead.
If I had fished harder (not the one-handed method), I might have caught other species of trout, walleye, channel cat, bluegill, white sucker, HSB, or grass carp.

Man, that would be the coolest to hit a brook trout out of my pond. I guess that's just one I'll always dream of.

There were actually (3) brookies caught.
We removed about (8) Black Crappie and around (35) nasty, brown bullies.

Even if you didn't, you'd still have your good looks. Congratulations on the mega-slam.

Ahh yes. Good looks, well...if you say so.
But really, the "LEPOMIS" license plate is what sets you apart.

Grand slam last evening and this morning, numerous HSB to 4+#”s, several LMB to 3#, many mojo BG, and, and 14# CC... Wasted a perfectly good evening and morning on the dam CC, fishing liver on throw lines – not my favorite way to fish.. Ran lines after dark last night and before daylight this morning for one stinkin’ CC... The irony was this morning when feeders went off, counted at least a dozen about the same size...biggest pond mistake ever made was overstocking CC... BG are in good shape...

BG are in good shape... I'd say that's a bit of an understatement. That bluegill is beautiful! Your pond just keeps producing great fish. Congrats on the grand slam.

" another gorgeous gill george. i am hoping mine are half that nice come next spring.

George that looks like an Arkie CNBG. Nice fish. You kept him right? Yep Eric, I believe him to be an Arkie CNBG, but a mean head shakin’, string pullin’ 11 inch “bull brim” ain’t goin’ nowhere – thought I had a small HSB for a minute. His genes stay in the main pond... I did catch a couple of Florida strain 10-inch males and a few nice girls. I like the coloration of the Florida CNBG, but size matters – right?

George genes matter a lot just ask Bruce. But as DD1 says food and water come first. Who knows - with your CNBG genes you may create a fish where PBs say I need a fish from Arka-Flor-Texa. AKA Super Glazener Gill.

I donated about 50 of those “Arka-Flor-Texa” strain to Overton a couple of years ago, having a surplus that exceeded table fare. Last I heard he was raising them in a separate pond from his pure Florida strain CNBG...

Awesome speciman, George. What age would you say your larger fish are? Did you catch him on a fly? Dumb question.

Awesome speciman, George. What age would you say your larger fish are? …………………………… Burger, I don’t have the foggiest idea of the age of the larger fish. I should have paid more attention to the recent thread on BG lifespan. Arkansas strain CNBG were the first fish stocked in fall of 2001, followed by spring 2002 stocking of pure Florida strain, followed by grandkids transferring natives from neighbors pond, followed by Overton adult pure Florida CNBG. Did you catch him on a fly? Dumb question.

Jersey Lunker Registered: January 13, 2005 Posts: 319 Loc: Georgia (64.200.163.164) This is kind of embarassing, but since we are all friends... My dad was a bigtime fisherman. Salt, fresh, it didn't matter as long as he was fishing. He caught the first recorded tarpon in the surf in Virginia. It seems this gene skiped a generation because I was more into the boat ride than drowning worms. Now I have a 10 year old that wakes me up every Saturday and Sunday at sunrise to take him down to the pond to fish. Well the fact is that he knows more about it than I do. He has learned on his own that live worms catch bluegill and rubber worms catch bass. It may be too basic to start a new topic called "Fishing", but I'd like to see some input from y'all on what works for you. For those who have followed my pond building saga, the BG are now about 8" and the LMB are about 12". Both will be eating size by next spring. That's when I get interested in fishing. I'll be adding some catfish before long. For now, I just need some advice for my young'uns, and I know I've come to the right place. _________________________ Hey Moe, I'm trying to think but nuthin's happening! Jersey, this is of particular interest to me because the ponds part is only a means to the end for me – FISHING… I am attempting to maintain a “FISHING” thread by encouraging reports forum members. Perhaps it would help if under a separate topic if enough members are interested. http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=87722#Post87722 _________________________ N.E. George will you please post some pictures of your larger hsb the next time you go fishing. James, my pond fishing has been sadly neglected the past 6 weeks or so. I’ve insured they have been well fed and aerated and that’s about all. I’ve had other interesting projects keeping me busy, and besides that, with no pressure for several months the fishing should be fantastic the coming year. I don’t photograph HSB any more since so many have been posted in the past, and they all look alike. I post BG pictures because of the variation in size, shape and color. The few HSB caught have been cookie cutter 2-4 lbs, but did have one on that straightened my hook that would have been photographed for sure. I’m thinking about changing my technique now that our HSB are getting older and wiser. Foam pellet flies are not as effective on large HSB because of the violent strike wake pushes the foam fly away from the fish, the same as striped bass will knock a topwater plug out of the water. The AQMX pellet flies are swallowed by the big HSB and I don’t like that. Also the larger HSB are hanging out in deeper water and feeding more on forage than pellets and I can’t cast far enough to reach them, and my boat privileges have been rescinded. I’m researching some long distance casting tackle and techniques that may be the answer, and would appreciate any idea that you or others may have. Thanks for asking about my favorite pond fish – short question, long answer.
