I have a well right next to my pond that I would like to do a couple of things with it. One is run my overflow into it and the other is sink a pump into it that will run constantly and pump water back into the pond, the thought is provided extra water movement and some aeration at the same time. My questions are, is this a bad or good idea and secondly where is a good place to find the pump?

I'm not sure why you would want to run overflow into a well. I think you would get a lot of trash that would stop up any pump.

Can you provide more info about the well? Usually, a well is a closed system with casing. They get their water from ground water/aquifer seepage.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Eric, when I try to picture that wrt what I think of as wells, I get some non-sensical images. Can you describe the well next to your pond?

Theo, The well is an old brick lined well about 4 feet around and at least 30 feet deep that I know of, it holds water within two feet of the top year round, never higher or lower. It is roughly 12 feet from the edge of the pond and about 6 feet below the top of my damn. My thought was that if my overflow went into the well and I had a small pump running it back in the I would have constant movement of water. I am not expecting this pump to fill the pond but maybe I could incorporate it into a water fall or something it would be more water to use.

Wouldnt you be contaninating the water strata with the pond water?Dont foget, fish swim in thier own toilets.I think I would do some serius checking into it before doing that.Wells and water stratas are strictly regulated in Texas.Just another thought.

This is an unused well as it sits, should I be worried about contamination?

Eric, keep in mind that water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. If you are simply trying to move and aerate water you should pump air through a bottom laid fine bubble aeration system. These systems move A LOT of water with very little energy (typically 1/3 HP per surface acre). It's important to look at long term energy costs as they tend to surpass the capital costs in relatively short order, especially when pumping water rather than air.

Its illegal. Pumping back into a well. You could get yourself in alot of trouble doing that. Least I know for sure it is here in TN. You would be Contaminating the ground water.
