ruh oh.......after living here for 12 years, i chased off the first cormorant i've ever seen in my pond.....there were about half a dozen honkers, and as many mallards on the pond this morning plus a brazen newcomer. when i walked out, the geese and mallards all took off, but this guy just looked at me like, "whaddya you want?". i wonder if its a one time visit, or the beginning of a trend? also makes me realize there's now alot of "good stuff" in my puddle...kinda like the AM/PM commercials.

DIED, I wouldn't let the scout have a chance to tell his friends. It sounds like the gsf are getting to be optimum gulping size. Not to mention the RES. SSS

I watched a cormorant on the beach in Sarasota catch fish so easily it was like they were trapped in a barrel, and that was in the OCEAN! I watched him eat 6 whole fish in 10 minutes and he didnt even have to loosen his belt.
Can you imagine how many fish he could get in a pond with slow fish this time of year?

Jeez that's all we need Dave, water turkeys. Just make sure you don't chase them up the mountain, I got enough problems already.

Just for curiosity's sake, DIED, what cormorant species do you have in CA?

theo, i'm pretty sure it was a double crested....the common one. i think the couple others that occur out here stay near the ocean. i havent seen it since the first sighting....this could be good or bad.

Sounds like a good thing to me. Worst case is you see Corky Cormorant and his 5,000 brothers and sisters.

Looking back on this thread...
DIED, did the cormorant eventually fly off? Lusk was telling us that they eat so much they can't fly. If that was the case you may be missing a few fish.

yup, he eventually flew off. i had several fish w/ slashed fins that were probably a result of near miss comorant attacks. obviously he couldnt stand the practice sessions when i pointed the marshall stacks towards the pond......that and bono's silly glasses threw alot of glare on sunny days..... kinda like those shiny doo dads people hang in their gardens to scare birds off.
