im just wondering what size the smallest size pond any of you have fished? i have a 1/4 acre field that my dad says i can dig a small pond in if i want to have a little catfishing pond. it has about 5 acres draining into it and the pond would be at most 40'X40' with a 10 foot max depth. im just wondering if i could possibly build a pond that would be able to support CC and maybe BG it would be controlled by fishing and netting

I think that it would probably be better to use it as a trophy bluegill pond instead of Catfish and Bluegill. From what I figured you would only have about 36 lbs. of fish based on 1000 lbs./acre( I am not sure what the actual numbers are but let's just use this as an example). If you had catfish it wouldn't take long for only a dozen cats to overload the system. You would then have to deal with water quality issues.

i could also do that. i enjoy eating both BG and CC. Since my dam blew out on my 1/4 acre pond i havent been able to figure out what to do. The dam blowing out was kind of a funny thing besides all the time and money spent. I had calculated the watershed at 100 acres max 1/2 hardwood timber 1/2 cornfield. well after my dam blew out in a freak 6in thunderstorm on top of already saturated ground i went to investegate. i found that a culvert connects one of my feeder streams to another 1000 acres. i of cornfield. i always wondered how that strean could get so high.

If you have BG available for sexing and sorting, you could get a lot of really nice male only BG in a small pond.

BCM,
Sounds like a perfect situation for hybrid BG! Big, fast growth, agressive biters, and low reproduction.
Your catchment area is a little large, and I guess you have plans to prevent complete flushing and fish loss.
