When we bought our present pond, I found a full bucket of "Bluestone" copper sulfate in the barn.

This is our third season with this half-acre pond. My water stays pretty perfect. My neighbor fertilized his 40 acre beef-cattle pasture two weeks ago, and it provides about 75% of my water. Tonight the water was 48 degrees, it was a pretty green color, and it had about 15-20 inches of visibility. In the winter and summer, the pond stays pretty clear, with about 24 inches of visibility. I've never had an algae problem, and I'm about to introduce four new 10-12 inch grass carp to replace two really big ones I took out last fall. There are still two 30-inch grass carp, and one 24-26 inch koi in the pond -- plus my CC, BG and LMB.

Tomorrow is hazardous waste day. Is there any good reason to keep the copper sulfate?

Some people use it to kill tree roots in sewer lines, septic tanks, or laterals... You would need to get advice on dosage rates...

Copper sulfate is used to treat some diseases in CC. It will kill out the bloom in the pond when treated, and in hot weather it will take the oxygen out of the pond. We only use it in our ponds when we have a problem with winter fungus. Be carefull and enjoy your pond.
