As first light broke this morning it was a good time to think about the word "sacrifice" and the many ways it is exhibited . Some that come to mind are: The Creator's acts in all things, including redeeming each of us, Our parent’s lives of sacrifice spent for each of us, Likewise their parents for them and all of our forefathers back through time, The sacrifice by many of their lives so that we can experience freedom today . In one heroic act of sacrifice they gave up all of their tomorrows so that we can live today, The sacrifice , no less heroic, by countless individuals who spend their lives , one minute , one hour , one day , one act at a time helping others. It is interesting that there is one thing every one of those acts of sacrifice have in common. Not a single one of them were meant to be repaid. Like grace, which can never be purchased or earned, sacrifice is a gift freely given. As adapted it goes something like this ”No greater gift can a man give than to lay down his life for his brothers” *. Whether it is one heroic act or many selfless single acts of sacrifice does not matter. In its base form sacrifice and giving are to humanity what sunlight and water quality are to fish. Without them there is nothing , with them there is life to behold. The good news is, there is an opportunity open to all of us to participate in the world so that the cycle of life continues as it was planned.
* Adapted from - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

In the bonds of Death He lay Who for our offence was slain; But the Lord is risen to-day, Christ hath brought us life again, Wherefore let us all rejoice, Singing loud, with cheerful voice, Hallelujah! - (author; Martin Luther)

Eric,
Excellent thoughts. In these times where things run at warp speed, all the commercialization, grand kiddies whizzing around, TV blaring, it can be a little hard to focus on the true meaning of this day. Thanks for the gentle reminder.

This is the best day of the year for me. We celebrate my saviour who sacrificed his life for me but has risen! Without death there could be no life. That's true in all the world isn't it?
Gotta get back to fishin!
