REMINDER : 16 days from today, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. HELP OTHERS, PASS THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS OR GO TO: Click here: National Do Not Call Registry

No offense meant George, but are you sure this is not one of those urban lengends things again? Like when the post office alledgedly wanted to charge extra because of the Internet etc.? Or there was going to be a tax on the use of the Internet?
How did you come across this information? If it was forwarded via email I'd have my doubts.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

OK guys, help me under stand this subject better? I received this information from an IT guy that I trust, as personal communication that he took action on. The above references cite the cell phone registration as “false”.
Is it the time frame that it is false or that the cell phone list will not be turned over to telemarketers?
I am on Texas “no call list” for our landline and it has completely eliminated these nuisance calls.

George, I registered on the do not call list. My cell number is obtainable through various places like the ccr database, which you have to fill out to bid on fed jobs, and which also requires you to register with dun bradstreet. I receive quite a few trade magazines, business credit card offers, and a lot of e-mail that I believe are from my business listing in those places. Fortunately I receive very few phone calls which I think is do to the do not call list.

Shams on the internet are all too common. The easist thing to do is, as Brettski suggests, check them out. I remember the Jane Fonda Woman of the Year one, there was enough real data attached to convince almost everybody it was real. It was a hot button thing for many Vietnam vets. So you can imagine how being billed for unsolicited phone calls would get your attention.

My guess is that if you dial that 888 number their Caller ID now has another live number to call to try to sell something to you, or they can sell your number to someone else so that person can call you.

The 888-385-1222 number is the do not call registry. Saved it on my cell, think I'm supposed to re-register every year or two. Can't remember so maybe it's time..

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/business/a/cell_directory.htm Check this out and I think this might clear up some of the confusion. Yes there is a federal don't call list, no the phone companies are not going to publish your number, sort of thing.

Do Not Call Registry WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.
