I've looked at the previous threads and websites, and don't see a match. I wish I had taken a photo. This is a brand new pond with zero vegetation growing at the water line...until now that is. This stuff looks like duckweed, until you get close, then I noticed there were varying sizes of the leaves, seems to be growing from tiny sprouts into a larger plant. I didn't notice it two days ago, but it was all around the edges today. The leaves are green with a little red, or brown, or purple coloration. Anybody have a clue?

Thanks! Oh, and severe thunderstorm right now! Whoop, filler' up! My prematurely stocked fish may survive yet.

It could be azolla. Do a search on that to see if that may be the plant.

I think it might be water primrose. That stuff grows in my dad's pond about an hour away, and the description says the leaves can be reddish. What surprises me is how did it get in the pond? It has only had water in it for a few weeks. This stuff is all over the shoreline, new growth.

So where does this stuff come from? Birds? I literally have a barren hole, dug in Feb., and now this stuff is sprouting from the over 1000 feet of bank.

It's probably the birds...they are preparing a nice home for the green sunfish & mudcats they are about to bring in \:D

Seriously, I believe there is a LOT of stuff in the soil...just lying there waiting, for the time to be right. I had cattails spring up immediately after my pond caught water...along the old dry creekbed I built over.
