I've got a wooden pier that is not level probably due to the the galvinized posts sinking in a little more in some places than others. Normally I just loosen the nut and flange that holds the pier to the post, and then jack up the low spots on the ice to level out the pier. However this winter I never got thick enough ice to do it.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing: Getting two sizes of steel posts with one that slides inside the other. Then I drill holes spaces vertically up the side of the outside pole to run a bolt in to tighten against the inside pole and adjust the height. The pole will have a metal pier post base on each end. Then I mount an old car jack on top and it's base to the top pier base. Set the post and jack under the pier truss and jack up the pier until it's level. Of course I'll attach a lanyard to the post in case it falls so I won't loose it.

Thoughts? Will it work? Has anyone got a better idea? \:D

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

what about....
adding extensions to the existing poles. find the exact same size pipe for the extensions and insert a connecting dowel into the I.D. between existing and new. You might tack weld the dowel into one of the pipes to keep it stabilized within the joint, or just run in a short screw. With the pipes extended, you could use a small come-along hooked onto the existing hardware? one hook into the top of the pole and the other hook under the dock rail or the flange. Crank it up and re-set it, one pole a little at a time.

Why not just take your lift jack sit it on top of post then loop chain or cable under beam & over top of jack and crake (losen nuts after you have some preasure on it)or you could use a large C clamp/orlike lift . In order not to be lifting your weight too crake jack from a boat if too deep to wade.

Yes that sounds like an even better idea! Thanks!
