On the inlet end of my pond I have a silt basin and its full of water weeds. some people have said I should kill the weeds and clean it up. I say its a good filter system.
What's your opinion

Mr. Boone -- I would say to them that those "weeds" are your biological filter. In the Midwest, we like to have the plants remove nutrients from inflowing water before it gets to the pond. Fewer nutrients means fewer plant problems in the pond itself.

However, I see that you are from North Carolina. Greg Grimes has consistently recommended fertilization of ponds in quite a few areas of the southeast. Do you have an infertile pond or a fertile pond? :-) If the pond has or could benefit from a fertilization program, then perhaps the weeds should be removed? Hopefully, Greg will comment. This is an unusual circumstance for me, as I have never worked with infertile ponds.

Regardless, the "silt trapping" capability of that silt basin is great in either location.
