I've been watching ebay for a good laser level for anticipated pond renovations. It is a little intimidating not knowing that much what you are bidding on. Is there a good construction equipment related forum like this where I could learn more about good brands / features? Do any of you have recommendations for good brands / features?

Here is a couple of links. Construction lasers laser grade Topcon and Trimble are probably the most accurate, CST and David white are a close second. You can get them in three flavors.flat plane, single slope, dual slope.

Ranger, Without knowing the amount of time you'll spend working with a laser, have you given thought to just renting one as the need arises? On a couple of occasions, I've borrowed my neighbor's Dewalt unit. I don't have the model number but it comes with laser and detector, making it a one man operaton. I'm only shooting a few hundred feet and it has worked fine. A previous PB post on laser levels: http://www.pondboss.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=002455;p=1

Thanks for all the suggestions. Maximum distance from one end of lake to other is probably about 2,200 feet. I could set at some intermediate point and use a less powerful one though. Have some different projects for which I would anticipate using it so have been hoping to find a good one for less than $500 complete with tripod, receiver, etc. I'll explore renting one. That may be a good option. I'll also do some more research at those links and others

I borrowed one for the local Soil Conservation District office.
