I pulled in a nice, fat 22" Channel Cat this afternoon. I did not even get a glimpse of it until I had it pulled up to the bank. I figured it had to be a CC due to the weight on the line vs. the size of fish in my pond, but couldn't figure out why it behaved unlike any CC I have caught before.
When I pulled it out, I find the hook was imbedded in the top-most spine on the tailfin! I have hooked several Golden Shiners in manners that could best be described as "randomly snagged," but never any other species.
What's the weirdest way you've ever had a fish hooked?

Theo,
Without a doubt the weiderest for me was a huge spec trout that swallowed a 2 pound crooker hooked on shrimp. We lost the trout after trying to get it in a landing net, but caught her sister that measured 32.5 inches and bottomed out our 9 pound scale...that trout is still hanging on my wall and it reminds me everyday of the Texas State record trout I lost 20 years ago in Trinity Bay with a 2 pound crooker in his mouth...true story w/two witnesses.

Mine was a big old female flounder. I was bumping a mirrorlure on the bottom and foul hooked it in the back, fantastic fight! I also hooked a duck once, and he was a pretty good fight too

One time I was fishing LeMoyne Bay at Lake McConaughy. My cousin, Uncle, Dad and I all were catching white bass (sandies) left and right. The limit was 25 fish and we were all getting close to limiting out. There was one guy fishing right in our midst, who, despite all odds, was unable to hook a fish. Our fish count mounted and mounted as he patiently made cast after cast without a fish.
Finally after about 2 hours of this he hooked up! As he reeled it in it went left, then right. We were so pleased that this good gentleman had finally made a score. After a short battle he reached down into the water and grabbed......
You guessed it..
A pair of sunglasses!
He calmly looked over his catch, shook off the water and put them on. "These will do just fine", he said.
Holding a redear sunfish is like running with scissors.

I was fishing a river called the Maumee River that flows into Lake Erie several years ago for walleyes. A friend (Willie) and I were casting leadhead jigs for them as as they came up the river from Lake Erie to spawn. I had to call it quits early due to a leak in my waders and the fact that the water was only 38 degrees! To make a long story short Willie was well on his way to getting his limit when his landing net came loose of his waders and it fell into the river seemingly gone forever. Willie continued to fish and when he had on his last fish of his limit, it felt like it was considering larger than the male walleyes he had been getting. He asked the man next to him if he would mind if he would net if for him as this seemed like a really big one, and the fellow obliged. It turned out to be another walleye of the same size but it was entangled in a landing net -- my friends. Not a bad day. Get your limit of fish and get your landing net back.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Fishing for cat for the table in the large stock pond in central east Texas. Snagged and lost the hook, so I was reeling the line in quickly, the bobber skipping over the surface. A monster LMB inhales the bobber and dives. He coughed it up in a matter of seconds. Switched to surface lures (Jitterbug, Chugger, more) and not a strike the rest of the day. No cat for dinner either. I know it's a "one that got away" tale, but can you rig a bobber with a hook?

Was fishing on my pond and had put out a small basket for catching small brim. The rope for the basket came off of the float (Dr. Pepper bottle) and I lost the basket and rope. Got a weight and treble hook to cast into the spot and hang my basket. On the second cast, caught a two pound bass. On a casting weight!
Last year I was reeling in a one pound bass, when a about 3 pound bass came in and hit him! He let go but had I allowed slack in the line for the 3 pounder to swallow him, I would have probably caught them both.

I was fishing at a friend's pond a few years back using a texas rigged worm for LMB. I got a good bite, wound up and set the hook really well. The problem was that my hands were still wet from catching a fish and they slipped right off the pole. I about fell down as I watched my rod and reel sink out of sight. I was sick to my stomach...not only had I lost my rod and reel but what I figured was a nice bass. The guy I was fishing with says "Let's just put on some deep diving crank baits and try to snag the line. I looked at him like he was mentally incapacitated but said fine...it's worth a shot. He puts on this enormous diving crankbait, casts out one time, reels in and hands me my line and gives me a "told ya stupid" look. I pulled my rod and reel up out of the water and started to reel the line in but had a snag. We moved over to the edge where the snag was, looked down and there was a 3 pound bass wrapped around a submerged tree on the end of my line. My friend took credit for catching the bass even though it was on the end of my pole.

I was fishing with a friend here in Minnesota for walleye. Things were getting real competitive to see who could land the most fish. My friend was way behind the rest of us but finally got a hit. He began reeling the thing in and it appeared to be a rather heavy fish. Everyone was all excited until we got it to the boat to find he had snagged the carcass of a 5 pound fish that we had filleted the day before and left in the water near shore for the turtles. We were a half mile away from where we left that carcass and we were the only ones on the lake. The joke now is that he catches fish that have already been cleaned and are missing the meat! He still swears that the thing was fighting.
Gotta get back to fishin!
