I've read posts here before saying that Grass Carp won't eat the stringy green algae in a pond and I do not doubt what many of the knowledgable people on this forum say.
I was inquiring at the local fish farm about Tilapia and was informed that he hadn't had any luck with them here and that Grass Carp would take care of my problem anyway. Somewhat doubtful I made another inquiry at another dealer in southern MO. and was informed that Tilapia are against the law in Missouri. This gentleman also told me that 10 Carp per acre would solve my problem. He did admit that the algae was not their first choice of food but after they'd eaten everything else they would eat it.
Since Tilapia are not an option and last year chemicals only had a short term effect I guess I'll give the Carp a try.
I do not have an aerator and I do have very clear water, at least I think I do for a pond. About 2 to 3 ft. visibility most of the time.
Does anyone believe that this could work or am I going to be forced into chemicals (don't like them)and trying to drag as much of it out manually as I can? \:\(
Thanks,
Houston

Tilapia(Mozambique) are legal in Texas and do an excellent job on algae. Read this month's issue of pond boss. Texas Parks and Wildlife state that Sterile Grass Carp will not eat algae, but it is probable just as you pointed out. When there is absolutely nothing else - they probably will.

It will not work for algae...been there, done that. If you get too many of them (grass carp) they will fowl your water and muddy it as well...and they are very difficult to get rid of.

Ten fish per acre is too many to start with. Start slow and add if you feel so inclined....some people would rather sell fish (or chemicals) than fix problems.

Thanks guys. I was afraid Carp wouldn't work. Since Tilapia are illegal here my options are very limited indeed.

Has anyone in East Texas experenced a winter fish kill for Tilapia. What appears to be the water temperture they die at? What size did they attain by fall? Do they need food supplement ? And if you about to stock your first bass 3-4 inches would you include Tilapia or gizzard shad as a option in a 13 acre pond. I've already got fat heads, trying threadfins, plan on red ears, blue gill, copper nose, and cat fish.
