I was wondering why these guys come up to the surface and flick around on their side and then disapear? Is it a shad thing or are they being attacked by something?

It could be one of several reasons. Shad travel in big schools of similar size fish. When attacked, shad response is to flee, immediately. Fish flush in many directions, confusing the predator, and increasing odds of survival. It's nature's way.
Another reason shad "flick" is avoiding cold water. When temperatures drop, shad become sluggish, but fight nature's imminent design. I have seen shad do this in their final throes.
Another reason is movement distracts shad, always. I have seen them flush in the shadow of a bird. I have watched them do it early in the morning, when moving near the shore to spawn.
Odds are, if you see shad flush and disappear, it's because they have been attacked.

I new shad did that when there was a predator pushing them to the surface but didnt have a clue that it involved cold water. Thanks for the info.
