Hi everyone...I'm from Ocala FLorida, Central west coast....Just bought 5.5 acres of sloping farmland...want to put a pond on it, but have no idea where to start or who to contact to come out and check out my property to let me know what can be done etc...One thing...I have a DRA (drainage retention area at the far end of my property which is obviously lower than the rest of the land...Any tips or ideas? (eg: should the pond be placed at the edge of where the land slopes down into the DRA? And anyone from FLorida that could tell me a company in my area that does this type of work? Thanks in advance

A great way to start is to use a transit or laser level to mark your elevations. That will tell you how big a dam you might be able to build. At the same time, you need to know watershed size, to figure out how much water drains toward your site. A good place to start is the Natural Resources Conservation Service. They are located at 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, Ocala, 34475. Call them at 352.622.3971. They can provide good technical assistance and give you a head start.
