For the most part, TPWD seems to do a good job. However, the license goes up each year. We pay for it.
One of the responders mentions that hunting in Texas is on private land and expensive. That's true. There is no or very little public/Federal land here like there is in Colorado, New Mexico, etc. Lease prices of $12 to $20 per acre per year are standard.
It is expensive for the average guy with a family, mortgage, etc. I am often told that I have it made. I have my own land to hunt on. I respond that for the price I pay, I could take a safari to Africa. The expense of owning land also precludes me from getting a lease elsewhere or of being able to take the type of vacation some other people take. The price of leases in the South Texas area where the biggest bucks reside is quite a few thousand bucks per hunter; way beyond the means of all but the big Corporations.
Interesting, but most of the hunters I know dream of hunting Canada. The deer pictures we see of Canadian deer dwarf ours. However, the airplane ride, guides, license fee, etc. pretty well preclude it.
