Since my watershed is mostly wooded and leafy, and the hill that my little creek runs down is VERY steep, I'm worried about silting. I'm thinking about staking in straw across the creek starting from the top of the hill and in 50-100 yard increments...will that keep most of the silt on the hill and not in my pond?

Canis, You might also consider silt fencing. It may hold up longer than the straw will. I think you can get a roll of silt fence for around 50 dollars per 100 foot. Or, depending on your situation try and plant some sort of grass that might naturally filter the silt out. My bet is silt fencing. I would certainly try to keep the leafs out. Good Luck.

That seems reasonable. I put 4 bales of wet straw staked in on the downhill side of an access road above my proposed pond site. I did it because the road was slowly washing away. Seems to be working! All this crappy cold rain we've been getting goes through the straw and the dirt is sticking in the road. I'll take a grader blade on my tractor and drag it across the road after the rain lets up. I've never heard of silt fencing...EBAY perhaps?
