I was wondering if this was true or not but do fatheads spawn once a week during the summer? Another person told me that they spawn once every 24 hours! It to me sounds to much but just want the true facts. I wish every here at Pond Boss and use the Pond Boss Forum a Merry Christmas!

Zach I don,t know about the big state up here in the mountain's we get fatman to produce 6 times a year with proper forage ,alkalinity and cover. If any one thing is missing or pond is overstocked with what we call big boy's forget it they do not stand a chance. This is a tough question with out doing a water test and on site pond nap in our neck of the woods. You can set up a breeding pen that most of our customers use up here and is a proven way to see what actually can be produced out of the existing waters. We stock most ponds every year in late May with 10 lbs to 20 lbs per acre and it is a system that work's out very well if not fatman we stock newts or yellow spotted salamanders. Have a grat holiday

Scott,
Do you have a source for salamanders? I used to see them at bait stores when I was a kid but haven't seen any in years. I had planned on catching some from local streams but would like to purchase some also.

Scott & Ric, I wish I knew a source. I get about three calls a year for them. I get more calls for crayfish and I plan to take a trip next year to the bayou to get some because I have lots sold and they charge too much over the internet. They would be a great addition to your trout pond.

Fathead minnows spawn about every 7 days. How many times they spawn in a given year depends on where you are located. Fatheads typically do not spawn until they are about a year old. They are great forage for bass. However, because they are relatively slow swimmers and due to the fact that they have to survive a year before they are mature enough to reproduce we restock every year. Some years larger quantities than others. Depending on where you live they will begin spawning between Feb. and June.

While a population of fatheads can spawn every few days, and male fatheads can spawn often, it takes a single female about 24-30 days to develop mature eggs. So, during a "normal" year, each female fathead can spawn 6 to 8 times. Baby fatheads can mature sexually within 10 weeks, up to a year of age, depending on water temperature, and when they are hatched.
