I feed the Optimal blue gill feed. I added 15 Floridas last year - Optimal has feed for these Floridas so I added some in and they are hammering it. Will this affect them to not bite a lure? I know they are tough to catch to begin with but I am wondering if the feed will even cause fewer bites?

I doubt that there will be a problem. I feed bluegills and they still bite lures, worms, etc.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Tim, was this standard LMB feed, or something specifically formulated for Florida bass?

No, the feed will not affect how they bite at a bait not any more than getting them to bite after they have eaten a meal of fish. They will still strike at lures the same.

Interesting, Eric. I've heard several folks recommend temporarily ceasing to feed pellets a few days before fishing, with the idea that hunger will make fish more aggressive. Never tried that myself, so not sure if it works & on what kind of fish. If Floridas are less likely to eat artificial feed than Northern strain LMB, then maybe the level of feed would have less effect on them?

bag just says for bass - does not designate Floridas - 9mm floating pellets

Interesting subject. It strikes me that I’ve never tried to fish after getting them sated on pellets. But then, To find out, I would have to throw pellets until they were ignored. That would be a reaction strike which I think does occur. Not unusual for me to toss a handful of pellets to draw them to the area.

Not sure about lures, but they will readily hit flies.

Here's three that I've had good luck with.

Kelly Gallup articulated fly
Flymen Fish-Skull
Enrico Puglisi Bluegill - The LMB weren't feed trained, but I caught a 6# and a 7# with this fly.

I do not fly fish but I may take it up - thanks for the heads up!

Thanks. I've found that Handthrown Optimal works on LMB, but even better on HSB!
