Noticed hundreds of small 1 to 3 inch bluegill at the surface near the bank this afternoon. Never seen this before , should I be concerned?

JP, have you noticed any major changes in your water lately? How's your watershed?

Just had a cold front come by. With 1.5 inch rain. Pond temp dropped 4 degrees. In last 2 days. Not unusual here in KY.

I’ve also seen that. And, like you, I have no clue why.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

hope your pond is not turning over - if it is then bad news - no oxygen for the fish and they die - had it happen to my pond - not pretty
the pros here know way more than I do but this would be worriesome for me

There's a point where this is not unusual in mid to late afternoon this time of year. some fish come up to sun and absorb heat. This is one possible explanation. Usually happens when surface temps just start to exceed deeper water temps-sometimes-they are just enjoying the sun. I see this a lot on northern and eastern areas and normally near shore (warmer water)

So never in Texas have I seen bluegill do this - I misunderstood - thought the fish were searching for oxygen -

We have a dock out 80' feet into the water then a floating dock attached to that. Normally do not see what you do but one year especially I had a school of probably a hundred BG that hung around near the surface on the north side of the main dock. I perused them to be CNBG but i don't really know that. They just looked so pretty and I guess it was more hope on my part that a CNBG pair had a good spawn. Don't see it all the time, but I also can see small BG in a school sunning in shallow water.

Others have concluded the small BG in early April in KY are just seeking the warmer water in the surface layer during cold spring days. This is most likely true if the sun was shining and warming the surface water layer. As Snrub said "sunning in shallow water".
