My son works for the BLM and tells me they have recently contracted to have EWM removed from one of their ponds. The contractor says he is using an aquatic approved form of 2-4D in liquid form that is being injected below the surface with a boat mounted spray rig. My son says they are not restricting fishing or swimming and it is has public access for both. He also doesn't know the name of the product but did say it is relatively inexpensive. My first question is, what is the name of the product? Second is, how can 2-4D be used without fishing and swimming restrictions. I would appreciate any info or thoughts on this. An inexpensive and safe control for EWM would be just what I need. Sounds too good to be true. Thanks in advance.

Fluoridone is also very effective on EWM and may be less toxic.

Weedar 64 is a 2,4-D based liquid aquatic herbicide. The problem with the 2,4-D herbicides is that they will also kill native underwater vascular plants if they are present. Here is the info for it, click on the label tab to read the label to see any water use restrictions.

If the body of water (BOW) doesn't have flow through for 45 days, then depending on the size of the BOW Fluridone (Sonar A.S. or it's generic equivalent) does a much better job of killing the EWM, because a low dose of that will JUST kill the EWM and not any native plants that are present. The downside of that is that you have to treat the whole BOW, you cannot spot treat it.

It's too late to treat it effectively this time of the year because it's already set it's seeds for next year. Well, maybe "effectively" isn't the correct terminology. You will only control it for a couple of months and will have to re-treat it next year.

Thanks for the good information. It answers my questions. The ponds I am concerned with have flowing water passing through so Sonar is not applicable. I think we discussed this before. I managed the ponds for several years and treated them with generic Reward and Cutrine + in equal parts mixed 1 gallon chemical mix to 19 gallons water applied at 20 gallons per surface acre. The result was good for trout fishing ponds and usually only required one application per season. The present management is trying spot treatment with Aquathol Super K. Cost is an issue. I am still advising and was looking for a lower cost alternative.
