Tried the best matching color of Stubby Steve lures for my fish pellets. Despite completely covering the tiny hook & throwing it out there weightless while trout were going nuts on pellets...nada. Zip.
Oh, the trout looked. Closely. Many came within inches and then, abruptly, turned away. Again and again and again. We could see most of the action plainly and it was frustrating to say the least.
What did not scorn Stubby Steve? CNBG and BG absolutely loved them, I caught fish after fish in the 1/2 to 1 pound range. One LMB inhaled it, as did one 3 - 4 lb HSB -- now that was a fight to remember on ultralight! But the RBT saw something they didn't like, despite close imitation of pellets they were devouring.
My fishing buddy wound up catching four nice RBT, one nearly three pounds, but on non-Stubby lures. Power Baits. A minnow imitator. Even old salmon eggs.
Anybody had similar experiences? I honestly thought we'd tear them up on SS, and we did for all fish except trout.

I find the most aggressive fish in the pond get hooked on Stubby Steve's. Maybe that's not the trout?

Regular mono or flurocarbon? I've used 2 Stubby's, one on bend of the hook, one covering the eye of the hook and the knot.

I find the most aggressive fish in the pond get hooked on Stubby Steve's. Maybe that's not the trout? They are ferociously aggressive toward pellets, but obviously the panfish are a lot less fussy. Regular mono or flurocarbon? I've used 2 Stubby's, one on bend of the hook, one covering the eye of the hook and the knot. I tried covering hook, but still no joy. However, I used 4 lb mono, maybe 3 lb flouro would work better. My fear is that I'll get broken off too easily, as the area has lots of submerged brush and some of the trout are in the 3 lb range & fight like crazy. I've even had a giant CNBG break me off! I've had the best luck on baitholders. What kind of baitholders did you use? Do you find that line diameter & fluorocarbon made a difference?

Red 10 lb test monofilament, and a #4 or #6 Eagle Claw baitholder.

For BG I use only long shank hooks.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
