My wife and I are considering making an offer on a house located on a 50-acre lake. The Homeowner's Association manages the lake and applies a "natural solution" to the aquatic weeds twice a year. The edge of the lake is currently filled with what I'm pretty sure is coontail (see attached photos).

Based on your experience, if I rake out the coontail, how long can I expect the raked area to remain relatively coontail-free? I know that no one can provide an exact answer, but I'm just trying to get a feel for how quickly coontail grows. Could I expect to clean out the area once per year? Twice a year?

Additional info ...

- Located in Kentucky
- Water depth of affected area is up to 10'
- Neighboring property is also affected by the coontail
- Very little current
- Mostly sunny

I really appreciate your help.

Take that ball of weeds that you have in your hand, crush it, rub it together and then smell it. If it smells "skunky" I would say it's Chara, not Coontail.

esshup, I crushed it and smelled it. It didn't smell bad. Smelled like a plant.

If you rake the coontail out, and the wind doesn't blow more back in, then raking once or twice a year will be sufficient.

Thank you for the reply, esshup. Raking out a few times a year is doable.
