I think my GG grandfather (dad's gr. granddad) built it and my granddad (mom's dad) owned it much of the 1900's. My cousin owns it now and the pond was in disrepair. ~1.2 acres and he's cleaned it back to old level as built....still has dirt to remove and he's built a nice pier. While doing this work, it has a good deal of nutsedge that has popped up all over......probably 1/6 to 1/5 of the pond. Should he kill it now before the water is let back in or should he keep it as is? I assume submerged would die out and some may be good habitat? Let me know what to do......we need to take action very soon......before he let's the pond fill. Mostly empty of water now but it fills quickly.......pumped it out with 5" and 2" pumps.

If you kill the vegetation burn it before you fill the pond or you'll have tons of decomposing plant material in your renovated pond which could become a nutrient load issue. I don't think it's necessary to treat the sedge, I'd leave it be. Sedge and rush is great emergent vegetation helping to protect against wave action/erosion. I would encourage it to continue growing.

Look into placing structure & habitat now, too, before it fills.
