New to forum; hello to all. I looked through the forums and didn't see this one; might've missed it.

I have a small 2'x2' sinkhole on the edge of a 1/2 acre runoff pond. Pond can never fill beyond this hole, leaving it fairly low. The pond is half/three-quarter acre or so runoff that has a berm around it to capture the water (the hole is on the inside of a very low berm). Even with the hole it's never gone dry.

I'm getting ready to 'repair' it (per Uni of KY guide) with riprap, gravel, clay and dirt but am concerned that once the pond refills over it it will eventually leak through again.

Looking for any tips - liner in hole only? Then materials on top?

Since the hole is so small (rock fissure is about 1'x1', I thought maybe a 4x4 chunk of pond liner/sinkhole liner (or just 3ml plastic) before I start putting the materials in the hole.

Thanks for any help.

I've had a few sink holes like you describe - the cause is important.
For my pond, the sinkhole was not the problem, it was a symptom.
Muskrats and otters were hollowing out the banks for a place to live.
The banks underwater were like Swiss cheese.
When the hollow area gets big enough, it sinks in.

To fix the problem, get rid of the critters.

Bump for you. I know nothing about sinkholes

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

We have a few through parts of this area, I just finished a project of building a driveway across the edge of one, A ton of red tape and dnr permits were required, as far as trying to build a pond over one, I know of a few in this area that actually hold water on their own and then most of them of course not.
If I were to try to seal one off I would start with a concrete slab of some sort to bridge across the actual opening and then a generous layer of some kind of pond liner over that, after covering the concrete slab with dirt to prevent abraision to the fabric, then proceed with layers of good fat shrink swell clay.
I had a friend who built a pond back in the day, wasnt aware of any sink hole in the area till one morning, ten years later his pond just emptied over nite, down the drain.
Again, the above is just a theory, I have not actually tried to seal water from entering a sinkhole, I was hoping some professionals with experience on the subject might chime in.

All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.
