We just had a 1 acre pond dug and used the dirt
to raise the area where our house will be. I am concerned about soil erosion and am planning on planting brown top millett this weekend and later planting rye grass to carry us through the winter until we plant a lawn next spring. Are there any reasons I should not do this? Should I broadcast the millett all the way down into the bottom of the pond? The contractor created very good drainage system into the pond so we would not need a well but it may take a little while to fill. We are in central Louisiana.

One year ago I was exactly where you are now. What I did was first ag lime everything and then plant annual rye grass. It worked like a charm. Grass came up fast and effectively stopped the erosion over the winter. Once the rye grass started dying out in the Spring, the natural grasses took over and now everything is covered in Bahaia, bermuda etc.

It is a popular method to seed the entire unfilled pond.

I did not and got lucky that the winter was mild as far as rainfall was concerned and the pond filled quickly in the spring without any heavy rains to rut the banks. Had it been a rainy few seasons...I would have regretted not putting anything down.
