Yesterday I noticed a number of bass that had puncture wounds, mostly on their backs. First time I've seen this.
I have an eagle and six geese that hang around, but doubt they are the guilty parties. I also have a few cormorants, a GBH, and a kingfisher.
Any thoughts on the culprit? Haven't seen any signs of otter, but I do have a beaver or three.

I would put money on the GBH or cormorants.

I agree with Shorty on the GBH. I put a trail cam up last year and got them getting some of my bass right off the nest and just left them laying there.

Herons spike fish that they have no chance of eating/swallowing.
So, it makes one think that they may be trying to eliminate a competitor for their food source.

Perhaps they react to movement and evaluate eatabilty when there is more time after catching? Kinda like swatting the bug that land on your arm first rather than determining if its a wasp or syrphid fly.

Got some holographic tape, 3 mm thick, to put around pond. Also scare eye balloons.
Maybe will keep off GBH and cormorants, maybe not. We'll see. Will also need to keep a sharp eye out for Canada geese nests to addle eggs before they hatch!

For my experience scare eye balloons will work for cormorants, keeping them turned in color every week. They won’t work with GBH. You should put a pair of horizintal fishing line at 10” and 20” on the bank where the water starts, like a little fence. But this works only if your banks are steep enough so the GBH can’t stay in the water beyond the lines.

Anyone ever try an electric fence to reduce GBH from the shoreline? I use it to keep the deer off my soybeans and peas until they get tall enough to establish. Might keep the beavers and otters out also, not to mention any trespassers that sneak in to fish.

A 12 guage works well for all of the forementioned by TGW1
Do nature a favor, spay/neuter your pets and any weird friends or relatives.
